Portugal’s New Nationality Law: Rigor, History, and Shared Identity
Portugal just approved a reform of its Nationality Law, making it more rigorous without closing its doors. The new rules extend residence periods for naturalisation, tighten “jus soli” and strengthen checks on criminal records, while requiring proof of knowledge of Portuguese language, culture and symbols. It’s a shift towards citizenship as a shared identity, not just a legal status.
